Dear Fellow Marketer,
The average click rate for a banner ad is a tenth of a percentage point. That's not 1%, that's 0.1%. Speaking from experience as an online marketing consultant, I can tell you that is unacceptable and unnecessary.

For years I had been selling Internet media at other companies, but in September of 2001 I was out marketing on my own. Then 9/11 occurred, and it happened nearly the same time that the Internet bubble burst. It was no longer good enough to sell and "place" media ...it had to perform.
After I found that ineffective ads were losing me sales and clients, I realized that I couldn't rely on anyone but myself to make sure the creative could perform. I began to research, study, test, and analyze ads producing the highest conversion rates. I then distilled these principles and began to use them in my work with clients.
They were blown away by the results, and initially, so was I.
Here's the bottom line. I was given the choice to create effective campaigns or loose my job. I'm happy to tell you my research was a success, and that I still work with many of those advertisers to this day.
